Whilst the two characters are very fantastical in nature, they are still based on real animals and themes.
This is a drawing based on a photo of a white horse. I also looked at shire horses for the body type. Bred in Scotland, these horses are considered to be gentle giants. I also liked how unkempt they tend to look, because I thought went well with the freedom and nature based connotations of the Unicorn.
I did the same for the lion as well. What I liked about these drawings was how realistic they look. I tried to make the colours look as authenthic as possible.
I also thought it would be best to explore other costume ideas for the characters as well.
Below is the more union jack based costume for the lion. However, I also decided to look at the heraldry of England during 1603, the time the original nursery rhyme hailed from. There was more gold on the crest and more symbols were used as well. The costume on the right is based off of that.
I also looked at different designs for the Unicorn as well. Along with the original design, I considered a more traditional comic book design, by giving him a jumpsuit with a horse logo on it.
The third was a more open but still skintight jumpsuit, ironically inspired by the geometric designs of the England team suits by Stella McCartney for the London 2012 Olympics. I liked the jumpsuit feel given off these, and I liked how symmetrical they looked as well.
